What to do after an accident
Make sure everyone is safe
If anyone is hurt, call 911 first. Move to a safe place if you can.
Document what happened
Take photos of the vehicles, the damage and the scene. Get the other driver's name, license, insurance and plate, and contact details of any witnesses. Don't admit fault.
Report it
File a police report for theft, break-ins or hit and runs. In California, accidents with injuries or more than $1,000 in damage must be reported to the DMV on an SR-1 form within 10 days.
