What a homeowners policy covers

Your home
The house itself, from fire, windstorm, theft, vandalism and sudden water damage.
Other structures
Garages, fences, sheds and detached buildings.
Your belongings
Furniture, clothes and electronics, at home or away.
Extra living expenses
Hotel and meals if you can't live at home after a covered loss.
Liability
If someone is hurt on your property or you damage someone else's.

Good to know

Earthquake and flood damage are not covered by a standard homeowners policy. Both can be added as separate policies.

In high wildfire areas, the California FAIR Plan can provide fire coverage when other companies won't. An agent will look at your address.

Common questions

Does my lender require homeowners insurance?

Yes. Lenders need proof of coverage before closing. Give the agent your lender and escrow details and we'll send the documents.

What is the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value?

Replacement cost pays what it costs to rebuild or replace today. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation, so it pays less for older items.
