How to compare two auto insurance quotes

Put the quotes next to each other and make a small comparison sheet. A lower payment is useful only when you understand the coverage behind it.

Compare the same coverage

Write down the limits and optional coverages on each quote. Ask the agent to explain any differences before deciding which price is better for your needs.

Separate the premium from the deductible

The premium is the policy price. A deductible is your share of a covered loss where that deductible applies. Ask for examples using the actual deductibles on your quotes.

Check the payment schedule

Record the policy term, amount due at the start, later payments and any fees shown. Comparing a six-month total with a twelve-month total can give a misleading impression.

Check the details before choosing

Confirm the drivers, vehicle, address and stated use match your situation. Ask the agent to mark any exclusions or unanswered questions and explain the next step to put coverage in place.

Does the cheapest quote always offer the same protection?

No. Compare the written coverages and conditions. Ask for a revised comparison if one quote includes options or limits the other does not.
